Curriculum

The Preschool and PreKindergarten programs balance developmental activities with preacademic skills. Interest and learning centers include experiences for literacy development, early number concepts, socialization and motor (physical) development.

In the primary grades, a basic elementary education program is provided. The Orton Gillingham is a multisensory approach to Language Instruction which is used in developing letter and sound identification, reading, spelling, syllabication and language rules. Reading for comprehension and critical thinking as well as writing skills are developed in small instructional group sessions, using the Open Court Reading program, which is supplemented with Guided Reading, DRA, and Differentiated Instruction in the First and Second grades.  The Everyday Math program is utilized in Kindergarten through Second Grade. Throughout all levels, curricular areas also include science, creative arts, social studies and physical education. Basic computers skills are incorporated into the First and Second grade curriculum. NHKS also offers a variety of after school enrichment programs.

Learning Expectations

Navy Hale Keiki School provides a sound and carefully developed academic program. The school strives to prepare each student to live and function socially, emotionally, academically, morally, aesthetically and physically in today’s world. This is achieved through independent study as well as through group effort. Children in the younger stages of development can learn to be responsible for their actions and achievements. Students learn to be self-confident learners, effective communicators, critical thinkers, collaborative workers, community contributors and health conscious individuals.

The school’s Schoolwide Learning Expectations, or SLE’s, represent what each student should know, understand and be able to do upon graduating from Second Grade. Schoolwide Learning Expectations are assessed at each grade levels expectations.  The SLE's can be found in the handbook.
