BOG Overview:
The structure of the Board of Governors (BOG) is defined by the By-Laws of Navy Hale Keiki School. Authority for the conduct of all school business is vested in the BOG which is elected by and from the parents of regularly enrolled NHKS children. This authority is subject to applicable Federal and State laws and regulations. The BOG is the policy-making body of the school organization and ensures that the administration, faculty and staff receive all levels of support needed to fulfill the Mission of the school.
The Commander Naval Base, Pearl Harbor, is the designated Honorary Chairman of the Board of Governors and he/she may appoint a representative from his staff to serve as his direct liaison and as a non-voting member.
Parents of currently enrolled students are nominated for election by the incumbent board. Voting is then held at a general meeting in the spring for parents of all enrolled children. The members will take office on the first day of July following the election and serve on a volunteer basis.
The BOG is comprised of a Chairman, Secretary, Treasurer, Buildings and Grounds Advisor, Development Advisor, and Marketing Advisor, all of whom serve a one year term. In addition, three Community Advisors (one of which is a Legal Advisor) selected by the BOG each serve a three year term. The responsibilities of each BOG position are outlined by the NHKS By-Laws.
There are several committees that operate alongside the Board of Governors. These committees assist the Board of Governors by providing information and recommendations regarding specific areas of interest to NHKS. They act in the interest of NHKS and the Board of Governors as well as overseeing projects.
BOG Standing Committees:
Building & Grounds Committee
The Building and Grounds Committee (1) tracks major maintenance projects; (2) advises the Board of Governors on playground and equipment replacement; (3) supervises workday efforts.
Rod Worden Building & Grounds Advisor
Development Committee:
The Development Committee implements the school’s Development Plan to enhance the operating budget and build the endowment fund. The Development Plan incorporates four vehicles for giving: the annual fund, the endowment fund, corporate and foundation gifts and special events.
Kerry Ettrich Development Advisor
Finance & Operations Committee:
The Finance and Operations Committee (1) researches resources and collects data to help the BOG regarding financial planning; (2) reviews the proposed annual budget and makes recommendations to the BOG; (3) examines school expenditures and compares spending patterns to current reserve funds to determine if these funds are adequate or excessive. NHKS’s most recent annual budget is approximately $1,077,000. Information discussed by the Finance & Operations Committee is of a confidential nature and cannot be disclosed to the general public. If you would like more information about this committee, please contact the Finance & Operations Chairman.
Heather Butz Finance Advisor
Marketing Committee:
The Marketing Committee (1) researches marketing opportunities and methods to obtain local media recognition; (2) advises the Board of Governors on marketing strategies for student recruitment appropriate to the school's current needs; (3) updates and makes improvements to NHKS website; (4) provides input and assistance in design and content of the Annual Report sent to the NHKS community and alumni families.
Brister Thomas Marketing Advisor
School Improvement Committee:
The School Improvement Committee ensures that progress is made in addressing the issues on the Schoolwide Action Plan (SAP). NHKS’s SAP was created as part of the accreditation process with the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). The accreditation process begins with the school community evaluating the different components of the organization (e.g. program, staffing, finance and resources) using the WASC and HAIS criterion. A self-study report articulates the evaluation results and includes a SAP. The school’s SAP is a master plan which outlines direction for ongoing school improvement. A copy of the school’s self study report is available in the office for review upon request.
