ABOUT NHKS
Navy Hale Keiki (House of Children) School was organized and established in 1946 as a nonprofit organization. Over the years, it has served the military community as a nursery school, preschool and, since 1967, an early childhood program for students three years old in preschool and continuing on through Grade Two.
The school operates through a Use Agreement with the United States Navy, Pearl Harbor, and is governed by a Board of Governors. The Board of Governors is comprised of parents of currently enrolled children and three Community Advisors. The day to day operation of the school is the primary responsibility of the Director.
Navy Hale Keiki School is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), the Hawaii Association of Independent Schools (HAIS) and is licensed by the Hawaii Council of Private Schools, State of Hawaii.

PHILOSOPHY
Navy Hale Keiki School believes that children are able to reach their potential when provided with a strong foundation in fundamentals. In carrying out this philosophical view, the faculty and staff:
• Recognize that each child is unique and comes to us with varied experiences
• Provide a warm and caring environment to foster learning, which is a natural desire in children
• Assist students in developing a positive attitude about themselves, their accomplishments, their peers, their school and their family as each child’s positive attitude fosters self-discipline, builds self-esteem and subsequently, creates enjoyable and successful school experiences
• Provide integrated lessons utilizing a variety of teaching methods, strategies, examples, and experiences for the total development of the young child
•
Promote open communication between home and school, reflecting that successful education is a partnership between these two important areas of a student’s life
SCHOOLWIDE LEARNING EXPECTATIONS
Navy Hale Keiki School provides a sound and carefully developed academic program. The school strives to prepare each student to live and function socially, emotionally, academically, morally, aesthetically and physically in today’s world. This is achieved through independent study as well as through group effort. Children in the younger stages of development can learn to be responsible for their actions and achievements. Students learn to be self-confident learners, effective communicators, critical thinkers, collaborative workers, community contributors and health conscious individuals.
The school’s Schoolwide Learning Expectations, or SLE’s, represent what each student should know, understand and be able to do upon graduating from Second Grade. Schoolwide Learning Expectations are assessed at each grade levels expectations.
